The Morning Shave

Beware Coin-Operating Air Conditioning At Your Next Airbnb. – I have yet to stay in an Airbnb property because of shenanigans like this. I know that I’m missing out on some fantastic and truly unique experiences, but most of the time I’m happy with the consistency that brand hotels have to offer. My buddy Brett has stayed in Airbnbs and has had good experiences, so I need to try it a few times this year. Here are a few tips that he wrote about finding a good Airbnb.

Why I’m not so nervous about Marriott’s upcoming switch to dynamic award pricing. – Aside from free night certificates, redeeming points for luxurious aspirational stays is my main reason for earning hotel points. And I’m sure that many of you feel the same way. Unfortunately, I feel all hotel and airline loyalty programs will eventually switch to revenue-based redemptions as a way to control costs. While they may feel that it is a good business move, it would really turn off a lot of their customers.

I Call BS on These Common Personal Finance Beliefs. – I agree that many of these personal finance common beliefs are not suited for everyone. That’s why they call it personal finance; everyone needs to find what strategies work before for them. The most important step is figuring out a few things that work, then stick with them and adjust as you make progress towards your goals.

PSA: Renting From Hertz May Get You Arrested. – Getting an affordable rental car is bad enough these days, but now you also have to worry about rental companies going rogue on you. I’m not sure how to fix this, but I’d recommend documenting everything you can with your camera phone to show that the car was returned. And keep your rental paperwork handy in case you get pulled over during your rental period.

American Airlines eShopping clawing back miles for Verizon orders. – Miles and points people often do some wacky stuff in order to maximize the rewards that we earn. One thing that I’m not willing to do is to spend money on things I don’t need or want in order to earn miles that may get clawed back. These companies are paying attention to shady practices and there’s a good chance that you’ll get caught. It sucks for people that spent money hoping for a big miles payday, but that’s the risk you take when you play in the grey areas.
