The W Atlanta Midtown Hotel is located right in the heart of Midtown Atlanta.  I was in Atlanta for work and wanted to check out the city’s hip W Hotel.  While I the location couldn’t have been better, the comfort level of the room was below expectations.

Arriving in Atlanta the Day After the Super Bowl

Arriving into Atlanta the morning after the Atlanta Falcons absolutely blew it in the second half of the Super Bowl was definitely an unpleasant feeling. Regardless, my stay at the W Atlanta Midtown was a good experience overall.

I was greeted by extremely helpful employees at the front desk, directing me to the best BBQ places in Atlanta. Being centrally located in Midtown is great because everything is either a short rideshare or walk away! Famous attractions such as the Coca-Cola Museum, College Football Hall of Fame, Georgia State University and Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), are extremely close by which makes for a very inclusive experience from the hotel.

Booking a room at the W Atlanta Midtown Hotel

Because work was paying for the room, I wasn’t going to use my personal stash of points.  I booked a “Wonderful” room at a rate of $175.  Options to use points were 10,000 SPG points for a free night or 5,000 SPG points + $75 for a points and cash redemption.  Prices vary based on day of the week and season.  For the upcoming NCAA March Madness, you can be sure prices will jump sky high.  A quick peek at room rates shows them jumping closer to $300 a night in late February and early March.

The W Atlanta Midtown Hotel

My favorite part of the entire hotel was the open gathering spaces! Plenty of room to meet with clients or friends for a drink after work. It also offers a great work space if you’re in town for work or need to address something quickly back at the office while on vacation.

The W Atlanta Midtown Hotel offers 466 rooms, of which 33 are suites.  With so many suites available, this property could be a great opportunity for upgrades.  There is a pool, spa, and a fitness center, so bring your swimsuit and workout gear if you have a little extra time.

As an SPG property Category 4, I would say it may be closer to a Category 3 for these reasons… Staying in the “Wonderful Room” (base room) was not exactly “wonderful”. Upon entering the room, the room looked great at first glance, but upon further inspection, there were some drawbacks.

Through two very restless nights, the bed was EXTREMELY firm. Most hotel beds are firm to handle the variety of guests that pass through each night, but this was definitely as close to sleeping on the floor that I’ve felt since I was in college. Also, the minor flaws in the interior of the room are not very hard to miss either.

I booked a Wonderful King room that looks just like the picture on their site, but the room was not as bright as I had hoped.

Additionally, there were minor flaws in the interior of the room are not very hard to miss either. It could be just that my room had a little more wear and tear on it vs. comparable rooms. But, when you’re paying a couple hundred dollars a night, you tend to have a little higher expectations.

It was convenient that there was a mini-fridge in the room, except it was filled with overpriced drinks.  Sorry, I’d rather walk to the local convenience store than pay $6 for a water.

Who decided on the placement of the television? One of my largest pet peeves is having to look at an angle to watch my Sportscenter at 1am. Very irritating.

The L-shaped corner couch with a modern design is anything but comfortable. Instead of relaxing on a couch like it was designed for, I simply used it as a place to throw things during my stay. In the picture below, you can see that the cushions are not very thick.

Great views from the room and big windows provide plenty of natural light.

Maybe the most comfortable place to sit in my “Wonderful” room.

As usual with W Hotels, the bathroom design was modern and sleek.

The Bald Thoughts

This is a great hotel to stay in for the vibes, ambiance, and location. In terms of the actual accommodations and amenities, this hotel is a bit sub-par in my eyes. When they designed the hotel, I feel they missed out on the small details that make a stay “wonderful”. Although they say location is everything, the next time I’m in Atlanta, I’ll most likely stay someplace else because the W Atlanta Midtown just wasn’t comfortable enough for me.
