The Morning Shave

Hilton snaps back to pre-pandemic elite status requirements for 2023.

If you want to earn elite status, the requirements just increased to normal levels. And point expiration is back as well. Now, your points expire after 24 months of inactivity. The best way to earn (and keep) elite status is by having one of the hotel’s co-branded credit cards. And putting a small recurring charge on the card will keep your account active to avoid losing your points. Check here for the best offers from hotel credit cards (and how to earn free nights).

Airfares had their biggest jump of 2022 in September.

Flight prices are up in a major way. Airlines feel confident in raising prices between higher fuel costs and increased demand. Using miles and points to pay for flights is more important than ever to counter the higher airfares. Keep in mind that some airlines have been raising prices on award flights too. So, always compare both options to find the best deal.

How to Avoid Getting Sick During Holiday Travel.

Although COVID remains a concern, experts predict a bad flu season this year. With more people traveling, reduced masking, and fewer people washing their hands thoroughly (shouldn’t you be washing your hands anyway?), the risk of spreading colds is higher than its been in the last few years. Take some simple precautions to stay healthy and avoid spreading illness.

Japan reopens to the world, but its hotels aren’t ready.

America isn’t the only country grappling with worker shortages. Although you may be tempted to visit Japan now that it has reopened, keep in mind that many of its businesses are still ramping up. Expect lower service levels and longer waits at every turn. If you can hold off, wait a few months to give them time to get up to speed.

Zachari Dunes Resort Debuts in California After Multimillion-Dollar Rebrand.

This hotel was one of my favorite Hilton redemptions. When we stayed at the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach, we enjoyed a free hot breakfast in the morning and an evening manager’s reception in the evening. Most of the rooms were so-so, but the resort itself is pretty amazing. And it is literally steps from the beach. With the rebranding, I’m sure that the rooms have been updated (and the price per night increased), but the loss of free breakfast and evening drinks reduces some of the value.
