The new Southwest Caribbean routes will now include non-stop flights to Montego Bay, Belize, Grand Cayman islands, and Cancun. This is in addition to the 8 other Caribbean destinations! New Southwest Caribbean Routes –
8 Southwest International Destinations from Ft Lauderdale
Southwest Airlines will be opening up a brand-new international concourse to serve the 8 Southwest international destinations served from the Ft Lauderdale (FLL) airport. The concourse will have 5 gates and will be known as Concourse A at Terminal 1. Southwest expects to open the new terminal in June 2017.
Southwest filed a petition to begin service to Owen Roberts International Airport in Grand Cayman from Ft Lauderdale effective June 4, 2017. This new destination pairs nicely with Southwest’s recent approval to fly to Cuba.
I’m going to Grand Cayman in April to visit the new Kimpton Seafire Resort. Looks like a return trip is necessary once Southwest starts flying there!
The 8 Caribbean destinations served from Ft Lauderdale will be:
- Montego Bay, Jamaica
- Belize City, Belize
- Cancun, Mexico
- Havana, Cuba
- Varadero, Cuba
- Santa Clara, Cuba
- Nassau, The Bahamas
- Grand Cayman

The Bald Thoughts
Many travel bloggers discount Southwest because they don’t fly to Europe or Asia, or because they don’t have Business or First Class amenities like other airlines do. However, Southwest knows what it does well, and they stick to it. They offer affordable flights with great service. And I LUV how they are slowly, but surely, expanding their reach to Mexico, the Caribbean, and beyond.
Have you flown an international flight with Southwest? What has been your experience?
My wife and I have been using SW companion pass to fly to Aruba, Cancun, and punta cana from Wisconsin many times. We book these trips for around 26,000 points RT for 2 people – incredible value not to be found on any other airline. No it’s not first class, it’s how we can get to these beautiful locations so cheap that we can afford to go every few months. We are looking forward to adding grand cayman to this list!
