Washington DC has been a relative stronghold for the Kimpton Hotels brand. After the IHG purchase, Washington DC offered the highest concentration of Kimpton properties of any city. Unfortunately, it seems that Kimpton will be losing two hotels to Viceroy Hotels.

Which hotels will Kimpton be losing?
Kimpton Hotels has been adding new hotels on a regular basis, which is great news to those of us who love the brand. However, these are the two hotels that are leaving Kimpton Hotels and moving to Viceroy Hotels & Resorts.
Mason & Rook
I haven’t had the pleasure of staying at the Mason & Rook before, but it is one of the newer Kimpton hotels in D.C. There was a new hotel promotion for Inner Circle members to stay there for free one night, but it was booked during the time I was visiting D.C.
My friends who have stayed at the Mason & Rook have had very good things to say about the property and the staff there. So, this is a definite loss to Kimpton.
The rooms of the Mason & Rook are larger than most Washington D.C. hotels because the building used to be a former apartment complex. It holds 178 rooms, of which 18 are suites. The hotel will start renovations this summer and will become part of The Viceroy Lifestyle Series in early 2020.

The Donovan Hotel D.C.
I had the pleasure of staying at the Donovan Hotel a couple of years ago during a Boarding Area conference. Rather than stay at the nearby Marriott Hotel where everyone else reserved rooms, I was rewarded for my Kimpton Inner Circle loyalty with an upgrade to the Presidential Suite.
The Donovan has 193 rooms and has an amazing rooftop bar. They will start renovations in late 2019 and will join The Viceroy Urban Retreats segment.

How many hotels does Viceroy have?
Viceroy Hotels & Resorts has a limited footprint at the moment. But with moves like this, you can expect the brand to grow stronger in the short term.
There are currently 18 Viceroy Hotels & Resorts locations around the world. Ten of these locations are in the US, with the rest spread around the world. Countries include St Lucia, Portugal, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates.
The Bald Thoughts
It brings sadness to our hearts when the Kimpton Hotels brand takes a couple of steps back by losing two hotels. Kimpton will continue to expand domestically and internationally to provide us loyalists even more options when we travel. The only silver lining of this news is that Kimpton is losing two hotels in the DC area where they have so many options. It would be much harder on the brand and people who like to stay at Kimpton if they lost hotels in other cities where there are only one or two Kimpton hotels to stay at.
Thanks for letting us know– it’s a real shame as these were my two favorite Kimpton properties in DC (based on a combination of the properties themselves and their location).
