As years of resistance, I finally converted to an iPhone about 3 years ago.  And I haven’t turned back since thanks to its simplicity and functionality.  It just works.  And with switching to the iPhone I started really getting into listening to podcasts… well, that was until Apple decided to eliminate the headphone jack.  Luckily, my wife Anna is pretty awesome and bought me some wireless headphones.  The iPhone 8 is being released on September 8, 2017, and it continues the trend of no headphone jack.  So, this got me wondering, what are the best wireless headphone options?

Apple iPhone 8 Release September 12, 2017

The next generation iPhone will be released on September 12, 2017.  With so many great features being released on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Apple really needs to step up their game.

According to CNET, here are some of the best upgrades that might be available on the Apple iPhone 8 that should prompt you to upgrade right away:

  • Curved, edge-to-edge OLED display with True Tone technology and/or Ion-X glass
  • Virtual home button
  • Facial recognition instead of Touch ID
  • “Wireless” charging and faster USB-C charging
  • Dual lens camera
  • Support for Apple Pencil
  • Upgraded storage and memory
  • iOS 11
  • Enhanced water resistance or waterproofing
  • Apple’s next generation processor

Not only will Apple be releasing the iPhone 8, but they will also launch new versions of the iPhone 7 – the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus.

Wow, this list of upgrades is pretty epic, right?  But there’s still no headphone jack and carrying around a dongle for the lightning port is a total pain.  So, you need wireless headphones to enjoy your iPhone experience.  But what are the best wireless headphone options?

Best wireless headphone options

I already have the first generation Apple Airpods that Anna bought me, but I want to consider my options now that I’ll be upgrading to the iPhone 8 when it is released.  Here are 3 of the best wireless headphone options with each catering to a little different audience.

Apple Airpods

The Apple Airpods are some of the most economical options available that deliver decent sound and battery life.  I’ve been using mine for several months and enjoy them, however, the sound could be much better.  The Apple Airpods offer the color variety of the first Ford Model T… you can get them in any color you wish, as long as it is white.

At a price point of $159, the Apple Airpods are hard to beat when you’re looking to save money, want long battery life, and a compact size.

Bose QuietComfort 35

The Bose QuietComfort 35 headphones offer world-class noise cancellation technology that “makes quiet sound quieter and music sound better.”  Although the price tag is the highest of these options at $359, it also offers tremendous battery life at 20 hours (15-minute charge offers 2.5 hours of listening time).  There’s even a free app for your phone to control the headphones.

PowerBeats3 Wireless

The PowerBeats3 Wireless headphones are designed for an athlete or adventurer.  Whether you are exploring new worlds in the rain or sweating up a storm during a workout, these headphones are designed for optimal performance under any conditions.  The PowerBeats3 have the worst battery life of only 12 hours, which is about half of either of the other two options on this list.

At $199, they are a mid-price option in the wireless headphone area.  Personally, I would either stick to the economy of the Apple Airpods or upgrade to the luxury of the Bose QuietComfort 35.  Unless you are a workout junkie, the PowerBeats3 should be your last choice on this list.

The Bald Thoughts

Now that premium phones, like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8, have eliminated the headphone jack, adoption of wireless headphones has accelerated.  I’m really looking forward to upgrading to the iPhone 8 when it is released.  And now that we’ve looked at the best wireless headphone options, I look forward to some cool new wireless headphones under the Christmas tree from Santa.

  1. Bose QC35 is arguably best in NC tech (tough sacrificing sound quality) at the moment. But your other choices are really bad.

I would suggest you try (in no particular order): Beoplay H4, Plantronics Backbeat Pro, Sennheiser Momentum Wireless, Jabra Move, Sony MDR-1000X, etc.
