FAA proposes Newark flight cap extension through October 2026.
Newark’s flight capacity has been reduced from 80 flights per hour to 68. While it has been increased slightly to 72, it’s still down 10% from its recent high. The lower number of flights puts upward pressure on fares and limits the number of destinations that airlines can serve out of this airport. The caps won’t end anytime soon due to staff shortages (only 48% staffed) at the Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) tower that manages Newark arrivals.
Spirit Airlines warns it might not be able to survive without more cash.
Spirit Airlines was a potential acquisition target, but that transaction was thwarted by regulators and industry lobbyists. Now, the airline is in trouble financially and may not make it. I understand the regulators’ concerns about the impact on consumers of losing a low-cost carrier, but what happens if it now goes out of business? The airline already went through bankruptcy to shed debt and improve its finances. However, it may not survive if it doesn’t raise additional cash from investors. Many travelers may say, “Good riddance.” But that would be naive since the airline helps keep all airfares down, even if you don’t fly them personally.<<Insert pic>>
