Kimpton Hotels has been on a tear with all of their new properties since the IHG acquisition. Unfortunately, they’ve also lost a few recently. The latest hotel is the Kimpton Sky Hotel in Aspen, Colorado. It will be torn down and rebuilt as the W Hotel Aspen.

Kimpton Sky Hotel
I haven’t had the opportunity to visit the Kimpton Sky Hotel in Aspen, Colorado, so I’m bummed that this property is closing. Since I’m now getting Timmy snowboarding lessons at various mountains (and getting a chance to board myself), it would have been a perfect excuse to visit a new Kimpton.
One of my buddies says that he wasn’t too impressed with the Kimpton Sky Hotel, mostly because it is a little dated. In looking at the pictures, the decor seems like a little mish-mosh of styles. A little mountain. A little contemporary. The building is 60 years old and “physically obsolete” according to the Aspen Times. Usually, Kimpton properties have a cohesive theme based around something local. And that design is carried throughout the property. Looking at the pictures, I couldn’t sense the theme.
Rates for the Kimpton Sky Hotel are approx $400 a night for the basic room. Click here for the latest reviews on TripAdvisor.

Aspen is a higher-end ski resort area and there are only a couple Aspen hotels with names you would recognize. The St Regis Aspen Resort and the Hyatt Grand Aspen, which is a timeshare property.
W Hotel Aspen
Rather the remodel the Kimpton Sky Hotel, the owners decided to double the size of the property when building the W Hotel Aspen. There are not that many top-quality Aspen hotels, so I think the W Hotel Aspen will be one of the best Aspen hotels once it opens for the 2017-2018 ski season.
The W Hotel Aspen will be the first newly constructed W Hotel since the W Austin opened in 2010.
According to the Aspen Times, “(t)he new development will feature a rooftop patio bar with a pool and Jacuzzi, fire pits, cabanas, a dance floor and a view of Aspen Mountain.
It also will house an underground speakeasy club, complete with a built-in DJ booth that will suspend from the wall — best described as a “suspended silver nugget,” said W Hotel Aspen developer John Sarpa.”
The new W Aspen Hotel will have 88 hotel rooms, including 6 suites and 11 fractional residences.
The Bald Thoughts
There are only a handful of Aspen hotels to choose from, so it will be a welcome addition when the Kimpton Sky Hotel is rebuilt as the W Aspen Hotel. The owners will be taking a 60-year-old property to create an amazing new resort that will be one of the most popular hotels once it opens for the 2017-2018 ski season. It is sad that Kimpton will be losing another property, but I’m sure Kimpton will continue their growth. Hopefully, one of their upcoming locations will be in a ski area!
