Dynamic pricing vs. fuel surcharges — which is the lesser of two evils for your next redemption?

Redeeming miles and points for extreme value seems to be getting more challenging by the minute. Not only do you need to find a flight that matches your travel parameters, but you also need to watch out for dynamic pricing and fuel surcharges, which can make your trip way more expensive. Understanding the value of your travel rewards helps when comparing flight options that use the opposing pricing strategies. Which one is the lesser of two evils in your opinion?

Podcast: Boeing Strike Goes From Bad To Worse.

As airlines continue to ramp up operations due to travel demand coming out of COVID, the Boeing strike is hurting their ability to grow their fleets. Beyond that, many planes are ageing out and need to be replaced due to age, fuel ineffeciency, and other reasons. Who knows how long the Boeing machinist strike will last, but this podcast episode provides some context, the current state of negotiations, and potential solutions to end the strike.

Big improvements planned for Harry Reid Airport in Las Vegas.

If you’re traveling to or from the West Coast, there’s a good chance you’ll have a connection in Las Vegas (especially if you’re flying Southwest). Plus, Vegas is a popular tourist destination with its casinos, excellent shows, top-rated chefs, and desert climate. I’m glad to hear about the upcoming changes, and how these improvements will make the travel experience better for everyone.

Field & Stream Lodge is opening its first hotel in Montana.

I’m not a big Field & Stream fanboy, so this hotel isn’t for me. But I love how more hotels are niching down to offer experiences and accommodations catering to their loyal followers. It provides an opportunity to deepen the connection with customers and provide unique experiences for people “who want more” from the brands the enjoy. Would you stay at this lodge?

Hilton Annual Trends Report Predicts 2025 to Be the ‘Year of the Travel Maximizer’.

People who like to earn and redeem travel rewards are already in the “maximizer” mentality. But Hilton’s 2025 predictions suggest that travelers will go beyond maximizing the value of their dollar into maximizing the value of their time as well. Travelers are looking to “pair their desire to relax and recharge with high-impact adventures and experiences to maximize their time and financial investment.” As someone who is constantly trying to cram 20lbs of stuff into a 5lb-sack, I’m totally guilty of trying to do it all. Does this sound like the way you like to travel?

  1. What Las Vegas desperately needs is a monorail connection from the airport, through the strip, ending in downtown. Easing flight congestion is admirable but anyone who’s had the misfortune to deal with traffic – day or night – anywhere near the strip will gaze with horror at the plan to bring lots more people in without figuring a way for them to get to downtown and the strip without making that awful traffic even worse. The taxi mafia, on the other hand, has to be beside themselves with glee since lots more people with no alternative to cabs and limos means more business and higher fares due to perpetual congestion.

    • That’s an excellent point. Sadly, this is a problem in many cities. They have big, beautiful airports, but haven’t made it easy/inexpensive for travelers to get to/from the airport.
