For a limited time, you can use your existing elite status with other airlines to receive an Air Canada Status Match. Air Canada Aeroplan elite status includes numerous benefits, such as free checked bags, airport lounge access, and upgrades. Here’s how to match your elite status with Air Canada Aeroplan in four simple steps.

Why is Air Canada offering a status match?
With Canada reopening its borders to U.S. travelers, Air Canada is partnering with Destination Canada to promote tourism to eligible, vaccinated travelers from the U.S. By offering a status match, they believe that the additional perks that come with elite status will encourage more travelers to visit Canada this year.
I participated in a similar status match promotion with Frontier Airlines in late 2020. I was able to use my Southwest Companion Pass to receive Frontier Elite 100K
How to use the Air Canada status match
To match your airline elite status with Air Canada, follow these quick and easy steps:
Visit the AirCanada website
The first step is to visit the Air Canada status match website at https://canada.statusmatch.com/. When you get to the site, enter the following information:

Check the boxes stating that you agree to receive emails from Destination Canada and that you consent to the status match. Then, click “Submit.”

What about elite status from other airlines?
Surprisingly, United Airlines was not one of the default choices. Luckily, Air Canada includes the ability to select a different airline that you have elite status with. Although these other airlines are not eligible today, they may be available in the future.
Verify and upload proof of elite status
Once you’ve chosen your airline loyalty program, current elite status, and provided your loyalty number, then you’ll need to upload proof of that status. You can take a picture of your elite status card or a screenshot by logging into the airline’s app or website.
Since I chose Southwest Rapid Rewards and Companion Pass, I had to upload a screenshot showing my status.
Review your status match application
Before submitting your status match application, review your information. If everything is correct, click “submit status match” to proceed.
Confirmation of your status match request
Once you finish uploading all of your supporting documentation, you’ll receive a confirmation message. Air Canada will process the status match request within five business days. However, mine was done within a day or two.
Approval notice by email
Within one business day, I received an email from Air Canada letting me know that my status match request had been approved. Although my status was approved quickly, it may take up to five business days before my new status would reflect on my Air Canada Aeroplan account.
Air Canada Aeroplan 50K Status
Four days later, I received a more formal email welcoming me to Aeroplan 50K status. Although the status is only available through December 31, 2021, there’s still time to use the benefits as we travel through the holiday season.
Normally, Aeroplan 50K elite status requires earning 50,000 SQM or 50 SQS, plus $6,000 in SQD. Benefits include:
- Priority waitlist
- Priority seat selection
- Complimentary preferred seats
- Complimentary checked bags
- Priority boarding
- Complimentary access to Maple Leaf Lounges
- Complimentary access to Star Alliance Gold Lounges
- And much more…
The Bald Thoughts
Status match opportunities allow you to receive additional benefits from other airlines or hotels based on your current elite status. Even if you don’t plan on flying that airline or staying at that hotel, sometimes you can use that newfound elite status to receive perks on other airlines or hotels that they partner with. Additionally, while some airlines won’t accept your current elite status as a match, when you match your status to a third airline, that elite status may be more attractive to your targeted airline.
I don’t have any plans to fly Air Canada between now and the end of the year, but I may look for some deals. In the meantime, I’ll look for opportunities to use my new Aeroplan 50K status to match to other airline loyalty programs for elite benefits that will extend beyond the end of this year.
