The Morning Shave

9 Times You’ll Regret Being Cheap When You Travel. – I can be very frugal on some things while splurging on others while we travel. I’m totally guilty of booking the dreaded 5 am to 7 am flights just to save a few bucks. This is especially troublesome with young children who beg to be carried in their zombie state at those early hours. One day, I will learn to not make that mistake. One day.

Why You Should Never Store Your Carry-on Behind You on a Plane. – I’m firmly on Team Carryon, but sometimes you get hosed and all of the overhead bin space near you is full. Situations like this make me want to use the free checked bag privileges that come with my credit cards more often. This article gives some valuable tips on how to handle the situation if you run out of bin space near your seat.

Racial bias in facial recognition software: What travelers should know as TSA, CBP expand programs. – I don’t know how they can solve this problem, but these systems should not roll out beyond beta testing until racial bias can be eliminated from the software.

9 tips for capturing amazing vacation photos with your new phone. – I have a pretty amazing camera, but I often leave it at home and settle for pictures from my iPhone. My friend Zach really knows his stuff when it comes to photography. I’m going to bookmark this article to re-read it every so often… because you know I’ll forget some of these tips in a couple of months.

Why Should You Keep A Discontinued Credit Card? – Sometimes the credit card is being discontinued because the perks are too generous and the bank/airline/hotel wants to limit the expense. Many times the “enhancements” are really just cost-savings strategies in disguise. Think twice before you agree to an upgrade.

  1. The facial scanner isn’t really going to be able to be fixed 100%. Blacks and Asians produce more mismatches because they have less refined facial structures (each race has a different skull shape) than whites and that will always be the case. Any algorithm that uses a facial scan and matches it to a photo will not match it correctly as often with the above groups. It’s not that the algorithms or programs are biased but they can only work with the facial data points that they get.

    • Jackson, I agree that there are differences between ethnicities, we need to get better with the technology so that racism (perceived or real) is minimized as much as possible. Nobody wants to feel like they are being unfairly targeted.
