When logging into my Chase accounts today, I noticed that Chase is now offering a free credit score from TransUnion. I love it when banks offer free stuff, so I wanted to check my Chase free credit score and see what it’s all about. Here’s what I found.

In addition to getting your free credit score, Credit Journey from Chase offers a lot of other benefits, such as:
- Weekly Updates – your score is updated once a week, so it is refreshed when you log in each week
- Score Simulator – you can estimate how your score will change with certain behaviors, like paying off debt, or opening a new loan
- Email Alerts – whenever there are critical changes to your credit report, you’ll receive an alert
Sign up for your free credit score from Chase
Signing up for your Chase free credit score is very simple and takes just a couple of minutes. First off, go to this page to start your “Credit Journey“. And like other online free credit score websites, this will count as a soft pull, so there will be no impact to your credit score.
And, best of all, you don’t have to be a Chase customer to sign up for this free credit score. Chase even addressed this question in the FAQs:
Is the Credit JourneySM really free?
Yes, the VantageScore® Credit Score and Credit JourneySM are free for all who visit the site. You do not have to be a Chase customer to enroll and use the service.
Step #1 – Create Your Account
Pick a username, password, and secret question, then enter your name and email address.
Step #2 – Verify Your Identity
In order to provide access, Credit Journey asks for a little more information to protect your information. You’ll provide your date of birth, mailing address, and last 4 of your Social Security number.
Step #3 – Answer Security Questions
Based on your information in Steps 1 and 2, you’ll need to answer a few security questions based on your credit profile that only you should know the answers to. If you’ve done any online banking the last few years, you should be familiar with this process.
They’ll ask questions like, which street name you’re associated with, what range of payments is one of your loans, and what state was your Social Security Number issued in.
Chase Free Credit Score on Your Phone
There is an app to get your Chase free credit score on your phone, but I couldn’t find a link to it on their site, nor could did a search for “Credit Journey” return any apps in the iTunes store.
Maybe the image below is just supposed to be someone looking at their Chase free credit score on the Credit Journey website instead of using a dedicated app?
Issues with Credit Journey
Overall, I liked the layout of the Credit Journey website, but when I tried playing around with the credit simulator, I ran across this error message. I tried it several times, and the error kept popping up, so it seems that Chase is still working out the kinks in their new toy.
I tried it again in the morning, and there were still issues with the site returning error messages when using the credit simulator. I have no doubt it will get fixed shortly. Chase is usually very good with their technology.
The Bald Thoughts
Almost every major bank now provides a free credit score to their customers. The nice thing with Chase’s Credit Journey is that it is free for anyone to join. Even if you don’t plan on taking out a loan or credit card in the near future, plenty of other companies use your credit score when deciding to business with you. For instance, landlords, auto insurance companies, or even a potential employer all may look to your credit score before working with you. Your credit is one of your most valuable assets, so please take advantage of free tools like this to monitor your credit for errors, fraud, and identity theft.
