As I continue to search the planet for the best boutique/independent hotels, I came across Hotel Derek in Houston. With a very bold website decked out in black (don’t see that too often), it creates a very sleek looking hotel with a great atmosphere on the inside.

Booking a room at Hotel Derek

The Hotel Derek offers several different room options to fit any need. While I stayed in the Standard King room that boasts 350 square feet, they also offer suites up to 1,200 square feet! With 12 different room styles to choose from, you can surely find something that fits your budget and tastes.

While I have basically written off using hotel points, you can still use points like from Barclay Arrival to offset your expenses or the 4th-night free benefit from the Citi Prestige to save up to 25% on longer stays. I booked my room through Expedia and was pleasantly surprised when rates were around $225 for the night.

The Hotel Derek Standard King Room

The Standard King room at The Hotel Derek was best for me as I was staying alone.  The floorplan really worked out well as it felt similar to a studio sized apartment without the kitchen. The most interesting part of the room was the wrap around couch near the window portion of the room – would make for a ton of fun for kids (or adults <<wink, wink>>) to play on!

Very wide and open floorplan w/ a huge King bed!

One amenity that I loved was the cow-patterned robe – very unique and amusing!

MOOOOOOOO!

Of course, having a fridge in the room can be useful, until you see the dreaded sales pitch of extremely overpriced drinks. Very little to no room to store any of my BBQ leftovers from Houston. At least The Hotel Derek doesn’t have the motion sensors that charges you if you move something around inside the fridge!

Ugh – one of my biggest pet peeves.

One warning about the standard rooms is that the view is not ideal, pretty much just facing the side of a building.  I recommend booking a higher level room… or trying to talk yourself into an upgrade.

The Hotel Derek Amenities

As a pool/jacuzzi connoisseur, I was extremely excited to hear this property had a pool. While this pool isn’t really my favorite, I do have to say that the pool has a unique style. I’m sure that it is very popular in the hot summer months, not so much in April.

Unfortunately, no jacuzzi, but still a great pool!

The restaurant downstairs at The Hotel Derek was delicious! Having some authentic Tex-Mex tacos coupled with a local Houston brew was a great way to unwind after a long day of work.

So spicy yet so good!

Is The Hotel Derek pet-friendly?

As a frequent travel, when I hear the phrase “pet-friendly”, it makes me happy. For those of you that don’t know, I do have a service dog. Hearing “pet-friendly” makes things SO much easier on my end. Oddly enough, there still is a $100 surcharge for having a pet in your room. Not so friendly huh?

Meet Duke, the service dog!

The Bald Thoughts

The Hotel Derek is a great hotel for your next visit to Houston. It has a cool vibe, a stylish pool, they allow pets, and the food is really tasty. If you’re looking for a hotel that isn’t part of a cookie-cutter brand, I recommend checking out The Hotel Derek if you are coming into town for a sporting event or a quick weekend getaway. At around $220/night, it offers good value to be just 15 minutes west of Downtown Houston.

I love the name of this hotel! And even though I have never stayed (or even been to Houston), I somehow have a Hotel Derek coffee mug in my cabinet!

How cool is that! What are the odds? Did someone give you the mug?
